Parametric configuration in Odoo is a way to price a product from the measurements you type in, like length, width, and height, instead of picking it from a fixed price list. You enter the size and the choices, and the system calculates the price and the materials for exactly that combination.

It is built for products that are made to size, where no two orders are quite the same.

Think of a custom table.

The customer chooses the length, width, height, wood, finish, and edge. Those few entries drive everything: the tabletop size sets how much wood is needed, the height sets the leg length, and the finish and edge add their own cost.

You are not choosing a product off a shelf. You are describing one, and the price follows.

How Is Parametric Configuration Different From a Normal Product Configurator?

A normal configurator lets you pick from fixed choices, like small, medium, or large. Parametric configuration lets you enter any measurement and works out the price for that exact figure.

That difference matters for made-to-order work. A fixed configurator cannot hold every possible size a customer might ask for, so anything off the list gets quoted by hand.

Parametric configuration handles any value the customer gives, whether the table is 1,750 mm or 1,847 mm, without someone reaching for a spreadsheet.

In furniture and woodworking that covers custom tables, worktops and countertops, wardrobes and cabinets cut to a room, shelving, and doors. The same idea fits blinds, glass, and any made-to-measure product where size drives both the price and the amount of material.

Why Is It Hard to Quote a Made-to-Size Product Manually?

Because without parametric configuration, your sales rep has to recalculate the price by hand for every size, and the numbers are easy to get wrong.

Here is how it usually goes. A customer asks for a 1,900 mm oak table with an oil finish. The rep passes the sizes to whoever does the estimating. That person works out the timber, the finishing, and the price by hand, then sends it back a day or two later, by which point the customer has asked for a different size and the whole calculation starts again.

Two reps often quote the same table differently, custom sizes get under-priced, and the margin quietly slips.

Then the order is confirmed, and the same measurements get typed a second time into the workshop system to make the cut list. That second typing is where the real damage happens.

How Odoo CPQ lets you Price Custom-Size Products?

You enter the measurements and choices once, and Odoo CPQ calculates the price, produces the quote, and creates the material list for the workshop from the same entries. Nothing is worked out by hand, and nothing is typed twice.

Take that oak table again. The rep enters the length, width, height, wood, finish, and edge based on which Odoo CPQ:

• calculates a consistent price from those measurements straight away
• produces a clean quote for exactly that table
• blocks combinations that cannot be built, like a wood or size that is not available
• turns the confirmed order into the cut list and material list for the workshop, from the same record

The measurements that set the price are the measurements that reach the shop floor. That is the whole point.

The same configuration becomes the workshop’s instructions, with no re-entry. The specs that priced the quote generate the cut list, the material list, and the work order.

This is where most tools fall down. A standalone configurator can produce a nice quote, but it then hands the order over to a separate production system, and someone retypes the sizes. That is exactly where a 1,900 mm table becomes a 1,600 mm table, and nobody notices until the top is cut.
